The Belmond Northern Belle recaptures the Golden Age of Travel and takes you back to the era when rail travel was at it’s most glamorous. My colleague Kim and I were lucky enough to experience this unforgettable experience on a recent ‘Afternoon Tea’ journey that departed from Edinburgh.
Arriving into Waverley Station, we were given a warm welcome by the liveried stewards, who showed us to the platform to await our train’s imminent arrival. She soon pulled into the station and the doors were opened to welcome us onboard; from the red carpet leading to the coach doors, to being personally escorted to our seats in the Warwick Carriage, we knew we were in for a luxurious treat this afternoon!
As soon as The Belmond Northern Belle (sister train of the legendary, Venice Simplon Orient-Express) began to pull out of the station, our steward served us a crisp glass of Balfour Brut Rose. The Afternoon Tea service then commenced, with a warm savoury course that comprised of a homemade scotch egg and a petite quiche. Every course was spaced out, to allow us to enjoy the picturesque scenery, giving us ample time to relax into our comfortable embroidered seats.
After enjoying a selection of traditional finger sandwiches, it was time to try the homemade cakes and pastries – our personal favourite being the deliciously moist carrot cake. Next up, were the warm, fresh-out-the-oven, fruit scones served with clotted cream and strawberry preserve…it was up to us whether we went Devon or Cornwall!
The stewards kept us topped up with coffee and tea, served in antique silver pots and while we feasted on the delectable food, we were treated to a charming afternoon of entertainment, including two musicians who serenaded us and a brilliant magician, who wowed us with card tricks!
To help us digest the delicious feast, the menu was rounded off with silver served strawberries and cream, a wonderful way to end a scrumptious afternoon.
This experience is a stunning combination of style, eloquence, beautiful cuisine and fine attention to detail, a perfect way to spend an afternoon with a friend or a loved one.
