La Garrigue was opened in 2001 by Jean-Michel Gauffre and is largely inspired by his upbringing in Languedoc. Jean Michel, left his home region in the south of France over 20 years ago and moved to Scotland where he lives today. Over the years he has built a superb reputation in the culinary world and after many years as Executive Chef in the luxury hotel industry, the inhabitants of Edinburgh saw him return to the stove to realise his personal ambition and open his first restaurant specialising in the food of his beloved home region, Languedoc.
Specialising in French country cooking exclusively from the wild and rural Languedoc region, which borders Catalonia on the sunny Med, La Garrigue offers rustic family-style cooking, complimented by a large selection of the best wines from this area, also known as ‘Le Midi.’ These traditional French dishes are enlivened by a modern touch, with many of the ingredients being directly from sourced from the Languedoc region by Jean-Michel himself.
Situated moments away from Waverley Train Station and the famous Royal Mile, with fantastic views towards Calton Hill, it’s easy to see why this restaurant is the perfect venue for a relaxing, candle-lit dining experience.
La Garrigue certainly has that ‘je ne sais quoi’ and is truly a place you can feel quite at home. It’s no wonder Gordon Ramsay named La Garrigue as his favourite French Bistro!
